‘Burn Lose Local Derby

Bryansburn 1st XI lost 2-0 to Bangor Amateurs in a closely-fought encounter at Clandeboye Road on Saturday. ‘Burn probably enjoyed more of the play but bad luck, suicidal defending and poor passing prevented them capitalising on superior possession.
A lively opening saw Full-back Parkes crash a 30-yard effort into the bar, a Tolson shot smothered by the Amateurs’ ‘keeper and Coard go inches wide of the post from a Higginson cross. At the other end Mallon made a vital block to defend stand-in keeper McMullan’s goal and Gray and Thompson were continually in action marshalling a series of high, swirling, long balls but a solid midfield partnership between McMullan, Coard and Cooling smothered any threat from the home side. On the 25 minute mark another run and cross from Higginson found Morrison but his header beat the keeper only to find the woodwork and four minutes later the roles were reversed when the winger grazed the foot of the post from the strikers cross. With thirty minutes played and ‘Burn 5-1 up on missed opportunities it seemed inevitable that the breakthrough was minutes away, and it was,  but unfortunately falling to the Amateurs courtesy of some suicidal passing. As so often this year ‘Burn won the ball in midfield, chose to pass towards their own goal and then tried to play their way out of an increasingly threatening situation: 1-0 for Bangor Amateurs with a clinical finish from their grateful striker. Shaken, ‘Burn redoubled their efforts but with the opposition gaining confidence it took a diving McMullan save at the near post to take them into half-time with only a single goal deficit.
The second half saw early chances at both ends with a couple of fierce drives going wide of ‘Burn’s posts while Parkes saw a second effort hit the woodwork with the Amateur’s keeper well beaten. Bryansburn’s hopes were effectively dashed in the 65th minute, when, with too many players distracted in disputing the referee’s decision, an Amateurs free-kick and quick pass found the home striker un-marked and able to slot home for 2-0.
Four minutes later it could have been 3-0 when a powerful drive whistled wide but with twenty minutes to play ‘Burn were still seeing enough of the ball to hold out hopes of a come-back. Tolson was twice unlucky to see shots saved but over and under-hit passes in an increasingly swirling wind provided little additional ammunition for the strikers and easy chances for the opposition to break up any ‘Burn threat. Stanex and A.Thompson replaced Higginson and Mallon as Rangers tried to chase an increasing unlikely recovery against the clock. Final score: a disappointing 2-0 defeat.
Best for ‘Burn: Parkes, impressive after a long absence. Good first half contributions from Higginson and Mallon.

The 2nds trip to 1st Bangor ll was called off on Friday with 1st Bangor’s pitch waterlogged. The plan was to play the same opposition in a friendly at Moat Park but that idea was shelved on Saturday morning leaving the side with yet another free week.

The 3rd XI had a terrific result, winning 3-2 away to a Comber Rec lll side who until last week had only suffered one league defeat. ‘Burn put in a solid performance and the win was more comfortable than the final score suggests.
Bryansburn should have taken the lead in the opening minute when Hanna was threaded clean through but his shot went wide of the upright. The opening goal was not long in coming as Ballantine surged into the box and was sent sprawling. The keeper got a hand to Cardwell’s penalty kick but could not keep the ball out. From that point Bryansburn were always comfortable to the extent that Steventon had only one shot to save from the home side in the entire half. At the other end ‘Burn forced a series of corners and missed a number of chances to increase their lead. Murphy saw his shot saved while Hanna, Cardwell and Ballantine should all have scored. Minutes before halftime Cardwell found McGimpsey with a splendid through ball and he finished comfortably to make it 2-0.
The second half carried on in the same vein with Bryansburn on top but unable to get the third goal to kill the game off. Cardwell burst through and squared the ball to Dempster but over-hit his pass. Then Cardwell made a brilliant mazy run into the box and pulled the ball back for Ballantine who saw his shot blocked on the line. As the half wore on Comber began to exert more pressure on the visitors goal finally calling keeper Steventon into action. They also forced several corners before finally reducing the deficit with a scrambled goal. Although Rec continued to press ‘Burn always looked threatening on the break and it was from one such attack that Ballantine lifted the ball over the keepers head to make it 3-1.
‘Burn then introduced all three subs with Jones, Shields and R.Dempster all coming on to help see the game out. This was being done comfortably enough until four minutes from time when Murphy fouled in the box and Comber scored a second goal from the penalty spot. However, it was too little to late as Bryansburn seen out the last few minutes for a deserved 3-2 win.

The 4th XI gained another three points in the Tommy Murphy Shield winning 5-2 in a local derby against 3rd Bangor ll.
The opening fifteen minutes saw a competitive start to the game with the ‘Burn having the better of the exchanges. Having won their 7th corner it was inevitable that the opener would arrive which it duly did in the 19th minute with Stone firing home from close range after good build up play by Emberson. Within five minutes the score had been doubled when a 5 man move culminated with Stevenson scoring from ten yards. The hosts continued to press and Stone added his second with a back post strike from a Dickinson cross to make it 3-0. Stevenson then hit his second and with five remaining before the break Stone grabbed his hat-trick to make it 5-0 and end the game as a contest.
Three changes were made at the start of the second half, disrupting the rhythm of the side somewhat and 3rd Bangor, determined to salvage some pride from the game, put in a dogged 2nd half performance to score two goals. In effect a scrappy second half showing followed an impressive first half which saw a number of good personal performances. It is the form shown in the first half that needs to be carried into this week’s important clash against fellow league contenders Ravenhill YM ll.

‘Burn Fight Back to Win

Bryansburn 4th XI were the only side to beat the elements on Saturday and they travelled to Queens Grads IV to open their Tommy Murphy Shield campaign with three points at the impressive facilities of the Dub.
The ‘Burn squad travelled determined to get off to a good start in their qualifying group, knowing that failure to start with three points would leave it a harder task to qualify for the knockout stages.
The game started in almost perfect conditions in what could have been the first day of spring, but despite Bryansburn creating all the early chances, the cold harsh reality of winter soon returned. Quickly, the hardy ‘Burn supporters looked for shelter off the pitch, while the forwards, on the field, continued to look for the opener. Lowry should have opened the scoring only for the ball to take a bobble and his shot went well over from close range much to the amusement of his brother Shane on the sidelines. Other chances came and went as the visitors’ struggled to make the breakthrough. Despite playing into the strong wind and sleet, ‘Burn were always in control and an interval stalemate was looming.
Then from a rare Queens attack the hosts opened the scoring following sloppy defensive indecision and lack of communication. This rattled the Bryansburn side who had not conceded a goal for a number of matches and worse was to follow as the home side added a second on the stroke of halftime.
Wind assisted, the second half was expected to change the game in ‘Burn’s favour and the long ball was used to maximum effect. With only six minutes gone a Stone corner found J.Ferris and he brushed aside two defenders before firing home from eight yards - game on. Armstrong replaced Parkinson and within five minutes the game was level. A Dickinson cross was met by the substitute and although the keeper parried his shot, Stone was on hand to knock in the rebound.
Canning then made a welcome return replacing the hard working and energetic Kennedy. Midway through the half a long ball from keeper Black was controlled majestically by Lowry and he then turned past two defenders, danced around the keeper before slotting home the third and what turned out to be the winning goal. Evergreen Heasley entered the fray to add experience and his hold up play and effortless running kept the hosts at bay until the final whistle.
This was by no means a great display but to quote first team Manager Mellon who was in attendance, "the team displayed resilience and to come from two nil down and win was a positive to be taken from the game"
Better performances lie ahead for this squad.

Training continues at Bangor Sportsplex tonight (Thur) from 7pm to 8pm and on Tuesday from 8pm to 9.30pm. Players are reminded that attendance in training and payment of any outstanding debts will be taken into consideration when teams are selected for Saturday.

‘Burn Cup Run Over

Bryansburn 1st XI’s Cup heroics came to an end with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of 1B title-hopefuls Newcastle F.C in the 4th round of the Coca Cola Intermediate Cup. With the tie already twice weather-postponed and Ballywooley deemed unplayable, ‘Burn gave up home advantage to travel to the seaside town. The Mourne side had obviously worked hard to ensure that their pitch was just about playable but could do nothing about the swirling winds and lashing rain that prevented either side playing any decent football.
Bryansburn got off to a slow start and within seconds were fighting a rear-guard action against Newcastle’s long-ball offensive. Higginson, Thompson, A.McMullan and Kehoe were continually called into action as ball after ball went through or over the midfield and into the final third but fortunately the wind and some wayward finishing prevented the home side capitalising on half a dozen good chances.
On the counter ‘Burn occasionally threatened through wingers Tolson and McGreevy but could not find the final ball or clear shooting opportunities. On twelve minutes Coard and Morrison linked to split the Newcastle defence but the resulting low cross was inches away from a McGreevy touch three yards out and Newcastle immediately responded with a goal from a quickly taken throw-in and confusion in the ‘Burn defence. A spate of foul throws and miss-hit passes continued to gift possession to Newcastle and while G.McMullan, Coard and Cooling worked hard to secure the centre of the park Newcastle found it all too easy to create scoring opportunities. Keeper Close safely gathered a number of speculative shots and watched a handful blown high or wide but was helpless to prevent Newcastle grabbing their 2nd from a corner on twenty-five minutes and lucky not to leak a 3rd when the ball crashed off the post on the half-hour mark. Sheer hard work and determination saw Bryansburn see-out the half for a 2-0 score-line.
The restart saw ‘Burn finally playing some good football. Sub Mallon started a Tolson-Coard-Morrison cross-field move which saw a McGreevy shot inches away from a 46th minute goal and both McMullan and Morrison went close in a bright opening ten minutes. Stanex replaced Coard and Bryansburn continued to press but still could not find a clear shooting opportunity. Newcastle repeatedly broke to hit the side netting, head over the bar, forced Close to parry a low drive to safety and fire shots either side of the goals but generally they were now on the back foot.
Tyson replaced McGreevy and as the minutes ticked away Bryansburn, 2-0 down, were forced to play their final card and commit more men to attack. A Cooling free-kick and a Morrison shot from the edge of the box were both safely collected by the ‘keeper but the third goal came from Newcastle rather than Bryansburn to seal the tie at 3-0.
Solid performances from Kehoe, Thompson and A.McMullan at the back and a good second half but this was really a day when the conditions and a stronger side were the inevitable winners.  Bryansburn can now return to league action knowing that they still have eighteen games in which to repeat some of the performances that have seen them through nine tough cup encounters.

The 2nd XI travelled to play a strong Shamrock FC side on a 3G surface at Jordanstown University. The Belfast side were on top throughout and ‘Burn eventually succumbed 5-0 despite a battling performance. The game marked the return to action of A.Cooling after months on the injury list and Parkes was able to get another ninety minutes in to further his rehabilitation. Seventeen year-olds Douglas, Dempster, Greer and McMullan also gained valuable game time against a good side to assist in their development. Douglas made a number of good saves but at the other end Bryansburn failed to register a consolation despite creating enough chances to do so.
This was certainly a worthwhile exercise. Our thanks go to Shamrock FC for hosting the second string at short notice.

After three excellent performances in a row the 3rd XI came crashing back to earth with a disappointing performance to go down 4-1 at Bangor YM lll.
YM won the toss and elected to play with the gale force wind in the first half so ‘Burn set their stall up to soak up the pressure and make sure they were still in the game at halftime. Those plans were destroyed in the opening ten minutes as the home side raced into a two goal lead, both headers from right wing crosses.
Now up against it ‘Burn played their way into the game, keeping possession well and restricting the YM to just a few long range shots off target despite controlling the game from a territorial advantage aspect. It looked as though ‘Burn were going to get to the break just two down, which they would have settled for after the disastrous start, when a glancing header from a free-kick flew past Steventon to make it 3-0 with virtually the last kick of the half.
‘Burn attempted to take the game to their opponents in the second half pushing an extra man up front and threatened briefly when a long punt from keeper Steventon ended up in the net courtesy of his opposite number. Cardwell and Scott both had shots well saved by the keeper but a series of corners lacked the delivery to cause major problems.
Bryansburn brought on Ballantine up front to replace defensive midfielder Murphy to try and cut the deficit further but within a matter of minutes the game was over as a contest. Firstly YM broke to make it 4-1 and then Bryansburn had a player sent off to reduce them to ten men. After that the game petered out with YM comfortable with their lead. ‘Burn failed to create enough chances from some promising positions while Steventon made one great save to avoid further embarrassment at the other end.

The 4th XI had a tremendous 6-0 win against Comer YM ll in the Quarterfinal of the Mervyn Bassett Cup.
On a good playing surface, albeit in windy conditions, ‘Burn deservedly booked a Semi-final place against a strong and physical side. The home side opened brightly and went ahead in the opening five minutes with a sublime Stone free-kick. The lead was doubled ten minutes later when, following an excellent build up, Parkinson was on hand to slot home from close range.
Comber pressed in an attempt to get into the game but a solid back four was well marshalled by keeper Black. Having soaked up the pressure, Bryansburn then extended their lead to three through Hanna, a goal that virtually ended the game as a contest.
Into the second half and ‘Burn added two further goals before the hour mark. Twice the lively Parkinson surged into the box only to be brought down with the referee having no option than to point to the spot. Each time Stevenson stepped forward to duly convert the resultant penalty and make it 5-0. Bryansburn were then in a position to see out the last half hour, giving all three substitutes a lengthy run out. In the closing minutes the scoring was completed as Gardiner was rewarded for his work-rate by finding the target.
A solid performance by all fourteen players to ensure Bryansburn made the Semi-finals for the second year in succession.

Training continues at Bangor Sportsplex tonight (Thur) from 7pm to 8pm and on Tuesday from 8pm to 9.30pm. Players are reminded that attendance in training and payment of any outstanding debts will be taken into consideration when teams are selected for Saturday.

Bryansburn Frustrated Again

Although the other Bryansburn games were called off on Friday it looked like the 1st XI were going to get there 4th Round Coca Cola Intermediate Cup tie at Newcastle played when the pitch passed an inspection at 9.30am. However, rain continued to fall and a further inspection at 11am saw the game called off just as the Bryansburn squad were leaving Ballywooley. The tie now switches to Ballywooley this Saturday, kick-off 1.30pm, as the sides try for the 3rd week running to get the game played. The prize for the winners in the 5th Round is a home draw against Ballyclare Comrades who won 3-2 at Dundela on Saturday. All support for Bryansburn would be most welcome.
