Bryansburn Complete Double

Bryansburn 4th XI made it eight wins from the last nine league and cup games on Saturday when they completed the double against fellow title contenders Moat Park Rangers ll. At one stage ‘Burn led 4-0 and looked to be coasting to victory but ended up clinging on as the visitors’ pulled the score back to 4-3 and would maybe have snatched a point had a penalty been converted.
It was imperative that three points were attained by Bryansburn to put them into the mix at the top of the table. A strong line up fuelled by sound advice from the management team provided the platform for a must win game.
From the beginning the home side were in the ascendancy and the pace of Stone and Ballantine were causing problems down each flank. Cardwell had two attempts on goal, one skimming the post the other being pushed away for a corner. ‘Burn were carving the visitors open with dynamic midfield play inspired by Dickinson. On fifteen minutes Stone just failed to reach a sublime Ballantine cross but two minutes later the opener arrived. Again Dickinson harried the defence and the loose ball was slipped under the keeper. Further chances came before in the 21st minute the score was doubled. A free-kick from Gardiner was met on the volley by Stone to give the keeper no chance. Injured Cardwell was replaced on the half hour mark by Lowry and he settled immediately as Bryansburn remained on top. No fewer than ten corners were won and it was one way traffic. A shot by Dickinson was parried by the keeper and the quick thinking and nimble Ballantine nipped in to slot home number three.
The halftime talk ensured complacency did not set in as Moat were smarting. Lowry found the net early in the second half for number four before a lot of pressure from the visitors’.
Emberson replaced Ballantine after Moat scored a scrappy goal. Then a defensive blunder saw them grab a second which renewed their interest in the game and for the last twenty minutes their tails were up and they pressed constantly. Moat missed a penalty, the ball coming back off the post, before with eight minutes remaining the unthinkable happened as they scored a the third goal. The nerves were now jingling but the defence stood firm.
The final whistle could not have arrived soon enough and after three minutes of injury time the points were won. A fantastic result and a great game to watch.
If Bryansburn continue in this form the final league positions will be very interesting.
“Man of the Match” was Dickinson.

Bryansburn Make History

Bryansburn 1st XI reached the 4th round of the Coca Cola Intermediate Cup for the first time in the clubs history courtesy of a stunning 4-2 win at Ballynahinch United on Saturday. Division 1B opposition, a howling gale, traffic gridlock in the town and the usual compliment of unavailable players were forgotten in yet another outstanding Cup performance.
In the early stages both sides struggled to cope with the conditions but, playing with the swirling wind, ‘Burn looked the more threatening. Morrison went close from a 7th minute Coard cross, McGreevy and Mallon found space and opportunities but no telling pass down the flanks until Coard settled the nerves with a 25-yard shot for 1-0 with twelve minutes played. Ballynahinch responded with a dangerous low cross across the six-yard box (which failed to find a touch) and Close had to dive to parry a near-post effort and shepherd a couple of corners past either side of the woodwork. Much of the hard work was undone on the half-hour when indecision between keeper and fullback allowed the Ballynahinch winger to slip in and level at 1-1 but three minutes later McGreevy and Coard combined to find Morrison to restore the lead after his first effort was blocked.
As the minutes ticked away 2-1 looked to be a slim wind-assisted lead and ‘Burn rode their luck as Ballynahinch twice went close to levelling again. Cooling & Tyson worked tirelessly in the mud-bath midfield to break-up attacks and McGreevy was unlucky with a 43rd minute drive but at halftime Bryansburn retired to the changing room to re-group for what looked like a difficult 2nd half.
Manager Mellon’s half-time advice on how to defend a slim lead in the face of a howling gale and rejuvenated opposition obviously worked wonders. Bryansburn came out playing a high line with McMullan and Gray ably marshalling a string of long balls to safety and Close providing only one vital save to deny United their single clear opportunity. The ‘Burn midfield, notably Cooling, did well to add some composure in the face of a strengthening gale and managed to pick out the odd opportunity to push back the tide.
On rare breakaways Mallon saw a cross graze the bar and Morrison twice denied when one on one with the ‘keeper but it was increasingly a case of “all hands to the pumps” as the IB side continued to press for an equaliser. After seventy minutes Ballynahinch came close with a shot hitting the post and a goalmouth scramble from the resulting corner but, immediately, ‘Burn responded with the best move of the match (and possibly the season). Close threw to Kehoe who released Mallon down the left and when the winger was finally halted by three United defenders he played a cross-field ball to Tyson on the edge of the box: Tyson contemplated the shot but slipped the ball wide to McGreevy who baffled his marker with a step-over allowing Higginson to get behind the defence and cross for Morrison to complete the seven-man move and head home at the back post for a 3-1 lead with twenty minutes to play.
The home side were clearly rattled and another inch perfect Cooling pass four minutes later allowed Morrison to evade two defenders and blast home from the edge of the box to complete his hat-trick and the safety of a 4-1 lead. Ballynahinch responded immediately to take it to 4-2 with a 25-yard strike but ‘Burn reshuffled bringing on subs Stanex & Ballantine while hat-trick striker Morrison moved to Centre-half.  The final fifteen minutes were undoubtedly tense but there was a renewed confidence and spirit in the squad and Ballynahinch found little reward from their all-out assault on a team contemplating possible opposition in the 4th round.
Best for ‘Burn: a brilliant team performance by both players and back-room.

The 3rd XI crashed 5-1 at a surprisingly strong Ards Rangers lll side. ‘Burn elected to play into the gale force wind in an attempt to keep the score down but the plans were blown up in the air as they conceded two goals in the opening ten minutes. At least Bryansburn then settled and kept possession well as they managed to frustrate the home side. Reward came in the shape of a goal from Hanna who finished well after being found by McMurray. Cardwell burst through and chipped the keeper only to see his effort go inches wide of the post as ‘Burn looked for what would have been a deserved equaliser.
With ten minutes to go before the break ‘Burn still trailed 2-1 and were on course for a job well done before turning round with wind advantage. However, then it all went wrong. The experienced Bryansburn side were naive as the home side scored three times in nine minutes. A couple of the finishes were excellent but ‘Burn had only themselves to blame for some sloppy play.
Turning round 5-1 with the gale now behind them, ‘Burn went all out to get a foothold in the game. The keeper made smart saves from McMurray, Dempster, Cardwell and Hanna while shots rained over and wide but the deficit remained at 5-1. A change in formation saw ‘Burn go three at the back in a 3-4-3 formation but still they could not make any headway.
As the half wore on it was actually Ards who looked the more likely to score as they put together some impressive counter-attacks and only the agility of keeper Steventon prevented the home side from adding to the score. The time ticked away with Bryansburn unable to pull even one goal back in a goal-less second half.
A very poor performance from a side who had won seven games out of their last eight in league and cup.

The 4th XI’s great run continued when they followed up last week’s victory over league-leaders Moat Park Rangers ll with a 2-0 victory over Brentwood ll on the main pitch at Ballywooley. This completed the league double over the current league champions.
On an afternoon when it was difficult to control the play ‘Burn created a number of half chances against the gale force wind in the first half, keeping the ball on the deck and enjoying the majority of possession.
On the half hour mark, Stone’s inventive wing play led to the opener when his cross was headed home by Emberson who had made a surging from midfield. This proved to be the only goal of the first half and the home side turned round to have the elements in their favour.
Wind assisted in the second period, Bryansburn pressed Brentwood in their own half with Dickinson, in particular, working tirelessly in midfield. An impressive five man move culminated in Stone’s cross being bravely headed home by Parkinson.
In the closing stages ‘Burn could afford the luxury of giving all three substitutes a decent run out while carefully seeing out the game for a great three points.

Welcome Three Points For Bryansburn

A good Saturday for Bryansburn FC saw three wins from the four games played with the highlight being a win for the 4th XI at league-leaders Moat Park Rangers ll who had boasted a 100% record before the game.

Bryansburn 1st XI picked up a welcome three points with a 2-1 win over Mossley YM at Ballywooley. Dominating the play, taking a 2-0 lead and seeing their opponents reduced to ten men before half-time, ‘Burn nonetheless struggled to add to their tally, conceded a penalty, and were ultimately relieved when the final whistle confirmed victory.
The first half saw a reshuffled Bryansburn in complete control with Mossley restricted to occasional counter attacks. McGreevy & Tolson tortured the visitors and both Morrison, with a header after five minutes, and Stanex with a shot on nine, were unlucky not to score. Keeper Close shepherded a looping cross/shot past the ‘Burn post after twenty-five minutes and tipped a rasping drive over that bar on the half-hour mark but a solid performance by defenders Gray, McMullan, Higginson and Kehoe denied Mossley any further joy in the final third. Up front Tolson was unlucky to see a goal disallowed for offside but with Coard and Cooling providing a string of through balls it was only a matter of time until ‘Burn would get the better of the stiff following wind and find another scoring opportunity. In the end “route one” provided the answer with a long Close kick finding Stanex and his pass rattled home by Morrison for a 1-0 lead after 37 minutes. Three minutes later the striking pair combined again to exchange passes before Morrison made it 2-0, his 15th of the season, slotting home a parried Stanex shot with five minutes to go to the break. When Mossley lost a player courtesy of a very harsh red card a minute later, it looked like “pain-sailing” for ‘Burn and they headed to the dressing room as odds on favourites to win by four or five goals.
Bryansburn, however, rarely take the easy route and within ten minutes of the restart ‘keeper Close had made another fine save and Kehoe had to react quickly to clear a goalmouth scramble following a Mossley corner. Hanna came on for the injured Cooling but a 65th minute 20-yard free-kick was judged to have hit an arm and the visitors duly converted the penalty for an uneasy 2-1 score line. Mallon replaced McGreevy, Bryansburn had plenty of the ball and a man advantage but a string of over-hit long-range passes gave the strikers little ammunition and Mossley continued to hope of snatching at least a draw.
Mallon shot wide, a Higginson cross somehow evaded the vital touch from both ‘Burn strikers and Coard was unlucky when his 20-yard shot from a well-rehearsed Mallon corner went inches wide of the post. The final fifteen minutes saw Mossley in control with ‘Burn scrambling to protect their lead and only a blocked Morrison volley in the 82nd minute in reply.  The final whistle, a 2-1 win and three points, was greeted with a huge sigh of relief.
Best for ‘Burn: Morrison and Close.

The 2nd XI suffered because of the number of regular first and second team players missing and travelled for their Templeton Cup game away to Suffolk ll with a very young, inexperienced team. The final score shows that they were beat 7-1 but the shadow Bryansburn side fought well for over half the game.
‘Burn actually made the better start of the two teams and took a 6th minute lead when Scott popped up on the end of a set piece. It was a lead that Bryansburn held on to comfortably enough until the half hour mark when the home side equalised courtesy of a drive from the edge of the box that went through a ruck of players and beat keeper Douglas, making a welcome return after several months out with a bad injury. Just before the break Suffolk crept in front when they beat the offside trap to score and lead 2-1.
The second half was competitive until the home side increased their lead and then the wheels came off as heads dropped and some players suffered from a lack of fitness. Still, encouraging signs from a number of the young players including sixteen year-olds Greer and McMullan.

The 3rd XI made it seven wins from eight with a comfortable 6-1 win at a spirited Clandeboye YM in the Frank Moore Memorial Cup. “Man of the Match” was the prolific Cardwell who helped himself to a five goal haul.
Three of those goals came in the first twenty-five minutes of play while fellow veteran Dempster failed to convert three good chances that came his way. Cole shot over and sixteen year-old Reece Dempster had a shot blocked on the line. He also saw another effort dip just over while Cole could have added to the score with a couple of efforts. Towards halftime Clandeboye should have made more of a couple of counterattacks but it was Bryansburn who scored again with Cardwell getting his own and the visitors’ fourth goal before halftime.
The second half saw a rather lack-lustre performance from Bryansburn with a place in the Quarter-finals already booked. Clandeboye showed a lot of spirit and hit the post before deservedly notching a well-taken consolation. At the other end Cardwell struck for the 5th time to make it 5-0 before Dempster, who had three efforts cleared off the line in the second half, finally scored to complete the scoring.

The 4th XI had a number of players unavailable for the trip to unbeaten league-leaders Moat Park Rangers ll but a determined and spirited eleven put in a superb performance to record a 2-0 victory.
The makeshift management team were determined not to let their hosts’ boss the game and the players obliged. The home side created a number of chances but it was Bryansburn who opened the scoring when Dickinson headed in from an Emberson corner. Immediately Moat pressed, putting the visitors’ under a lot of pressure and Black had to make a great save from a penalty to keep the 1-0 lead intact.
The second half was as competitive as the first until just after the hour mark Emberson lobbed the keeper from 35 yards to double the lead. The remainder of the game was all about the ‘Burn defence who stood firm to prevent Moat Park getting back into the game. They managed to restrict Moat to few chances and the whistle finally blew for a well deserved victory.

Bryansburn Out of Luck

Bryansburn 1st XI emerged with only a single point in a 1-1 draw with Iveagh United. A good overall performance saw a big improvement on their last encounter with the West Belfast side but a sleepy first half, poor final balls and no luck in front of goal denied them the three points they probably deserved.
Thanks to the efforts of apprentice grounds-man Russell and his team, ‘Burn were able to run out onto a pristine Ballywooley pitch for the first time in five weeks but a sluggish first half-hour did little justice to the arena. Misplaced passes, over-hit through-balls and poor final delivery made for a scrappy start with only a soft header from Morrison going goal-wards. ‘Burn were unfortunate to lose A.McMullan to injury after only ten minutes but Gray slotted seamlessly into the defence with Close rarely troubled and Higginson, Thompson and Mallon very much in control. Iveagh burst into life with a long-range effort and header both going close after twenty minutes but ‘Burn answered the wake-up call with a Morrison breakaway ending in a shot drifting wide of the post and a Coard sixteen yard effort solidly blocked by United’s defence. As halftime approached Bryansburn finally started to get their passing going and a well worked Tolson, Morrison, Coard move went agonisingly wide before a goalmouth scramble at the other end saw an own-goal gift the visitors’ a 1-0 half-time lead.
The second period opened brightly with a training-ground corner working right up to the point where Morrison’s low drive was well blocked with a tight-angle shot from McGreevy going inches over the bar. Tyson and Coard had the midfield well marshalled and ‘Burn started to win free-kicks and corners as the pressure increased. A pin-point delivery from McGreevy was firmly nodded home by Thompson for 1-1 after 57 minutes and suddenly it was “one-way traffic”. Tyson shot over the bar on 63; Cooling found the hedge rather than the net after 65 and Coard took the same route on 70 as R.McMullan made a welcome return (for Tyson) and Stanex replaced McGreevy.
Iveagh were now relying on the long ball, as much to relieve pressure as seek a winner, but a towering performance by the ‘Burn defence and centre-half Thompson in particular ensured that they didn’t meet with any success. In the last minutes Bryansburn’s bad luck continued with Thompson heading inches wide and, almost on the whistle, Tolson’s fierce drive missing bar and upright to leave a 1-1 draw and single, meagre point in the bag.
Three points would have been a better return but, as with last week, Bryansburn showed that they have the tools but just need a bit of luck a little more confidence.
Best for ‘Burn: Thompson

The 3rd XI made it six wins from seven with an ultimately comfortable but somewhat frustrating 4-1 win at bottom side 82nd.
The first half was the frustrating aspect of the performance as Bryansburn failed to make the breakthrough despite 45 minutes of dominance. Cardwell could have had a hat-trick and Cole blasted over with the best of the efforts but too often the final pass did not match the quality of the build-up. At the other end keeper Steventon was a virtual spectator with 82nd not having an effort worth noting. A number of doubtful offside decisions made by the home referee also served to add to the frustration and a series of corners came to nothing.
At least in the second half ‘Burn upped a gear. Dempster had a header cleared off the line and Cardwell tested the keeper twice before the breakthrough finally arrived in the 56th minute. The keeper failed to hold a through ball from McComb and McGimpsey was first to the loose ball to fire into the empty net. The goal settled the nerves as ‘Burn finally produced the flowing football they are capable of with Full-backs Dickson and Beattie bombing down the flanks to link up with McMurray and Cole. McMurray and Cardwell went close and Dempster was felled in the box for what should have been a stonewall penalty before substitute Hanna was slipped through and he made no mistake to double the lead.
Minutes later fellow sub Ballantine lifted the ball over the keeper to make it three and Cardwell had two more shots saved before he finally got his name on the scoresheet.
‘Burn pressed forward looking for a fifth goal and then disaster struck in the last minute as Bryansburn lost their clean sheet. The home side attacked on the break and a low shot somehow nestled in the corner of the net. Seconds later the final whistle blew with Bryansburn 4-1 victors.

The 4th XI entertained Corrymeela ll on a brisk winter's day and came away with all three points after a comprehensive 8-0 victory over the strugglers.
Bogle opened the scoring after three minutes and Lowry doubled the lead soon after. It was one way traffic with Stevenson and Stone both adding to the score sheet after an own goal to make the score 5-0 at the break.
Ten minutes into the second half, with the score still at five, all three substitutions were made and ‘Burn continued to play neat attractive football. Stevenson completed his hat trick with two more including an excellent header and Lowry got his second to complete the scoring. A solid performance ahead of next week's telling game against unbeaten Moat Park Rangers ll.

Training continues tonight (Thur) at Bangor Sportsplex, 7 – 8pm, and on Tuesday 8 – 9.30pm.

On Saturday the 1st XI entertain Mossley YM while the 2nd XI travel to Suffolk FC ll in the 2nd round of the Templeton Cup. In the Down Area League the 3rd XI are away to Clandeboye YM in the Frank Moore Memorial Cup and the 4th XI visit league-leaders Moat Park Rangers ll.

Bryansburn Edged Out in Local Derby

Bryansburn 1st XI lost 1-0 at Bangor Swifts despite dominating the match and creating most of the goal-scoring chances.
The first half was a scrappy affair with both sides over-hitting and slicing passes on a slippery surface but with Thompson, McMullan, Kehoe and Higginson solid in defence, Swifts rarely troubled ‘keeper Close. Tolson and Mallon found some success on the wings but Morrison’s miss-hit shot from three yards, a couple of over-hit free-kicks and a blocked Mallon effort were the only clear opportunities as both sides struggled to play any flowing football. In the dying minutes of the half Swifts saw a rare shot clear the bar before making the breakthrough right on the whistle when a free-kick was poked home after a good block by Close.
Re-starting 1-0 down ‘Burn finally started to threaten and link midfield to attack. A 57th minute Morrison cross found Mallon who hit the side netting and minutes later roles were reversed when the winger’s cross saw the striker’s header well saved by the Swifts’ keeper. Cooling slipped a ball through to Morrison who forced another save, Kehoe supplied Coard but his shot went the wrong side of the post and, in the 70th & 73rd minutes, first Coard, then Mallon found the woodwork rather than the net. Gray replaced Mallon but with the clock ticking down and a Morrison shot flying over the bar it became more a case of “if” rather than “when” Bryansburn would score. Bryansburn, committed to attack, rode their luck as Swifts saw efforts fly past the post and over the bar in the final five minutes but for ‘Burn their chances had come, and gone.
Final score 1-0: disappointing but probably typical of the way football works! Last week saw Bryansburn scoring with every other opportunity and bagging four spectacular goals while this week they probably would not have scored if they had played beyond sunset.

The 2nd XI were ravaged by injury and unavailability resulting in them travelling to Newington Rangers ll with one of their weakest line-ups of the season. On the plus side full debuts were given to sixteen year-olds R.Dempster and R.McMullan and both youngsters did very well despite the side returning with a 3-1 defeat.
The opening twenty minutes were scrappy before Newington took the lead with the first attempt of the match, a forward firing home from the edge of the box. Bryansburn had chances to equalise, most notably efforts by Patterson and Ballantine but it was the home side who increased their lead just before the break with a carbon copy of their first goal.
Collins entered the fray at halftime for his first game since being injured three months ago and he settled in at Centre-half alongside Tyson with Brown moving to Left-back. Five minutes in to the second half Newington attacked down the flank and the ball ran three yards over the line before being crossed. Tyson caught it to take a quick goal kick and the referee unbelievably pointed to the spot. The penalty was converted and ‘Burn were 3-0 down.
After that Bryansburn dominated the rest of the second half but despite so much possession and territorial advantage they created very little in the way of clear-cut chances. With five minutes remaining Crawley pounced to pull a goal back but it was too little too late as ‘Burn did no more than force a few corners in the closing minutes.

After five wins in a row the 3rd XI finally tasted defeat going down 3-2 at Stranmillis 37th OB. The home side pulled off a real “smash and grab” as they were outplayed for the majority of the match and only had five attempts on goal over the ninety minutes whereas ‘Burn dominated.
The opening exchanges were tight although Bryansburn lost the experienced Dempster after only five minutes to be replaced by sixteen year old Greer making his debut. Cardwell had the only chance of the opening fifteen minutes swivelling in the box to fire over the bar. Midway through the half came a defining moment in the game. Cardwell threaded in Cole and he hammered the ball past the keeper and against the underside of the bar. A defender hoofed the ball down the pitch for the home side to score the opener totally against the run of play.
‘Burn remained on top, playing all the football. They should have equalised when McMurray threaded his way into the box round several players only for the keeper to make a spectacular save, somehow turning his ten yard effort over the bar. The resulting corner was cleared, the ball was hoofed down the pitch and Stranmillis made it 2-0 with Steventon ruthlessly exposed again. The rest of the half saw Bryansburn press for the goal to get the back in the game but with no joy.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first with Bryansburn on top until for the third time in the game the home side broke to make it 3-0 with only their third attempt of the match. ‘Burn stuck to the task but despite creating numerous efforts they failed to reduce the deficit. A change in formation from 4-4-2 to 3-4-3 saw the Stranmillis rearguard put under severe pressure but strikes from Greer, Cardwell, Cole and Murphy were all off target. The keeper then saved brilliantly from McMurray for the second time in the match and denied McGimpsey, Cardwell and Cole. At the other end Steventon, who had been a virtual spectator, pulled off two brilliant saves to prevent the embarrassment of conceding a fourth goal on the break.
In the 82nd minute Bryansburn finally found the net with Cole supplying the finish. Sixty seconds later McGimpsey forced the keeper into an error and squared the ball for Cardwell to roll into the empty net. It was now 3-2 and game on.
Somehow Stranmillis survived the final six minutes plus injury time despite being pinned in their own area. The keeper made a couple more fine stops and a couple of good chances went begging but ‘Burn ran out of time and succumbed to their first reverse in six matches.

The 4th XI had an easy 11-0 win over visiting 82nd ll in the 2nd round of the Mervyn Bassett Cup.
All the pre-match build up was about the poor performance the previous week and the team had to listen to some stern words from defensive coach Heasley. The team started very brightly and set their stall out in a very attacking 3-4-3 formation. Parkinson, who started on the right, set the marker down with some very mazy runs and after seven minutes was unlucky to see his shot blaze over the bar. It was on ten minutes when Parkinson opened the scoring with a fine finish after great work from Kennedy playing in the wing back role. The score was soon doubled when again Parkinson fired home from close range. Gardiner, who was pulling the strings in midfield, slipped a fine pass to Dickinson who in turn lobbed the keeper from twenty-five yards. The home crowd gave the goal the applause it fully deserved. On 35 minutes another goal arrived this time from Lowry and a fifth was soon added again by Dickinson. Just before half time Kennedy picked up the ball a full 35-yards from goal and let fly with the ball nestling in the corner of the goal. Half time 6-0
There was no let up in the second half and further goals were added by Lowry and Stone. The management gave the three substitutes a good run out and birthday boys Bogle and Emberson showed why they are a vital part of the squad to combine for the former to score twice in the space of a couple of minutes.
The away side were, by this stage, waiting for the full time whistle but a further strike from Stevenson, who put it a faultless shift in midfield, completed the scoring. A fantastic performance with the clean sheet particularly welcomed by the management. “Man of the Match” was awarded to Gardiner who did everything but score.
Final score 11-0

Stunning Victory for Bryansburn

Bryansburn 1st XI returned from 1C title favourites Portaferry Rovers with a stunning performance, 5-4 victory, three points, and renewed hope for their 2013/14 league season.
‘Burn played out-of-their-skins to grab a 5-1 lead and then weather a 45 minute backlash from Portaferry (and some unfortunate refereeing decisions) to prove that they may yet be true contenders.
The first fifteen minutes were difficult with Rovers playing the better football and threatening to add to their 4th minute 1-0 lead but ‘Burn slowly settled, helped by a stunning Tyson 25-yard equaliser, and began to carve out their own chances. Morrison, Tolson and McGreevy were proving too hot for the home defence and two chances and near misses fell to Coard before the midfielder crashed home a 25-yard free-kick on the half hour mark for his 3rd of the season and a 2-1 lead. Portaferry still looked dangerous on the break but they were not having much luck in front of goal whereas on the other hand ‘Burn were lethal. Three minutes later Morrison headed down to right winger McGreevy who fired in from twenty yards to make it 3-1 and the lively Tolson joined the scoring spree with another spectacular shot from a Kehoe cross to make it 4-1 at half time.
The second half started with Morrison chasing down a first minute back-pass to score for a seemingly unassailable 5-1 advantage. Portaferry were stunned but immediately moved up a gear and peppered Close’s goal before a slick end-to-end passing move saw them grab a second for 5-2 after 55 minutes.  Mallon, McMullan, Thompson and Kehoe worked flat-out to contain an all-out aerial assault but were helpless when yet another long ball dropped to a suspiciously off-side Rover’s striker who made it 5-3 with thirty minutes to play.
Bryansburn thought that they may be off the hook when a Portaferry player was red-carded but eight minutes later a visiting player picked up a second yellow to restore the status quo. Mellon replaced Mallon, Cochrane came on for Cooling but ‘Burn were still struggling to contain a rampant Rovers revival. Close saved well at his near post and dived full-length to get his finger-tips to a low drive but was powerless when a goalmouth scramble & apparent clearance was deemed to be a goal in the 88th minute. Bryansburn were now hanging on at 5-4 but when the referee added three, then another four minutes to the game nerves were jangling. Thompson, Kehoe, McMullan and Tyson performed the heroics needed while Morrison & Tolson did their best to keep the ball in the opposition half but at the 97th minute whistle the sigh of relief could probably be heard at Ballywooley!
Stunning goals, a superb team performance, and three points: a great afternoon.

The previous week the 1sts were knocked out of the Irish Cup at the 3rd Round stage by Lisburn Rangers despite a spirited second half fightback. A slow, nervous start saw them 3-0 down at the break but anyone joining the game after the interval would have seen Bryansburn totally out-playing the opposition and unlucky not to come even closer or, perhaps, even  salvage a draw and extra time.
The first half was something of a disaster. Bryansburn had no answer to Lisburn Ranger’s flowing passing game and, but for heroic performances from Kehoe, Hanion, McMullan and Close, things may have been a lot worse. Tentative tackling and miss-placed passes in midfield forfeited any control of the proceedings and while Coard, Morrison and Cooling each had a single long range shot Lisburn Rangers forced a dozen corners as well as grabbing goals in the 21st, 36th and 42nd minutes. Halftime came with some relief and a 3-nil score-line.
Whatever happened in the interval Bryansburn emerged as a completely different team. Within four minutes McGreevy had a shot saved and Morrison a drive deflected over the bar and with McMullan and Coard dominating the centre of the park Lisburn were struggling to escape from their own half and growing increasingly more desperate in their attempts to stop the onslaught. A handball gave Morrison the opportunity to slot home a penalty for 3-1 and ‘Burn continued to press for further reward, shuffling the line up to increase the pressure and address his opponents’ attempts to get back into the game. Cochrane, Tolson, Kehoe and McGreevy ran riot down the flanks, a Coard shot was parried into Morrison’s path only for the striker to drive inches high and 35 minutes passed without a single response from the home side. Lisburn introduced all three substitutes and were unlucky when a header, from their single 2nd half corner, hit the bar, but they still couldn’t find a way to escape ‘Burn’s pace and relentless chasing, harrying and invention. Stannex replaced McMullan, a Coard 30 yard effort drifted agonisingly over the bar on the 85th minute mark but with the clock ticking away ‘Burn simply ran out of time.
The team can be justifiably proud of their second half performance but must regret their “no show” in the first 45. Best for ‘Burn: Hanion & Kehoe.

The 2nds had a very comfortable 8-0 win away to Kilroot Rec ll. ‘Burn would certainly have been well into double figures if the referee had not blown up early. Goals came from Tyson (3), Thompson, Hanna, Higginson, Beattie and sixteen year-old Dempster.

The 3rds made it five wins out of five to move 4th in the league with a convincing 4-1 win at Ballywalter Rec lll.
‘Burn made a great start when Ballantine skinned his marker in the 3rd minute only to be sent sprawling in the box and Cardwell converted the resultant penalty. Ballantine was then twice denied by the keeper and Dempster fired a Cardwell cross over from close range as Bryansburn looked to extend their advantage. The home side flashed one effort across Steventon’s goal but apart from that it was one way traffic. Cardwell soon made it two after a great run by Ballantine, his shot deflected past the keeper by a defender before completing his hat-trick after being found unmarked in the box. Just before the break Ballywalter pulled a goal back to give them a glimmer of hope for the second half.
After the break the expected backlash came from the home side but a solid back four of Scott, Patterson, McComb and Dickson weathered the storm to the extent that Steventon did not have a save to make. In the middle of the park McGimpsey and Murphy battled to remain on top while, at the other end, ‘Burn probed for the 4th goal to kill the game off. The keeper made great saves from Cardwell, Dempster and McMurray before Ballantine deservedly got on the scoresheet with a fine solo run and finish. ‘Burn should have scored again but a blatant penalty was turned down and a defender’s sliced clearance hit the station in his own goal and came back out only for the referee not to give it. Either way, Bryansburn seen out the game comfortably enough. Best for Bryansburn was Ballantine.

The previous week the 100% run was under serious threat when the 3rds trailed 43rd OB 3-0 after half an hour but a heroic performance saw ‘Burn fight back to win 5-4.
The home side dominated the first half and deserved their lead with two smashing goals. A twenty-five yard free-kick into the top corner followed by a sublime finish both gave Steventon no chance. Then when a sliced free-kick flew into the net to make it 3-0 it looked bleak for Bryansburn. Added to the fact that Steventon made two brilliant saves there seemed no way back.
However in the 38th minute Cardwell played in Shields and he was brought down by the keeper in the box. Cardwell slotted home the penalty kick and minutes later he was on the end of a McMurray cross to stab home from close range. Suddenly it was 3-2 at the break and game on.
In the second half McMurray crossed for Dempster to power home a header to equalise before Cardwell finished well to complete his hat-trick and put the visitors’ in the lead. When a free-kick from the halfway line from Cole missed everybody in the box and nestled in the net ‘Burn led 5-3. However, 43rd pulled the score back to 5-4 with ten minutes to go and from then on it was all about Bryansburn trying to get a sixth goal to kill the game off and the home side probing for an equaliser.
The nearest Bryansburn came was a 25-yard shot from McMurray which rattled the crossbar with the keeper well beat. At the other end Patterson and McComb marshalled a sterling defensive show to keep 43rd at bay.

The 4ths impressive eight game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end on Saturday in a four nil reverse against Greenwell Star 2nds.  Having beaten the same opposition three weeks ago, hopes were high for a further three points but from the start it was apparent that things were going to be more difficult against a much changed Greenwell side.
The first 25 minutes were even with few chances being created by either team.  On the half hour mark Greenwell took the lead with a well taken goal.  As half time neared, from an attacking throw-in deep into Greenwell territory, possession was lost resulting in a long punt up field which wasn't cleared leading to an easy tap in for Greenwell’s 2nd.
‘Burn created a couple of half chances in the opening ten minutes of the second period.  Parkinson was introduced and made an instant impact creating a couple of chances for Ferris who had his header cleared off the line.  The visitors’ veteran goalkeeper also produced a wonder save from Gardiner to keep the score at 2-0.  The management went for a 3-4-3 formation searching for goals; however within a minute found themselves three down following another defensive blunder which led to an easy goal which ultimately killed the game.  A fourth goal was added with fifteen minutes remaining and the game ended in a dull fashion.
A very disappointing end to a promising run, however a number of positives were taken from the game and the same mistakes will not be made in future games.

The previous week the 4ths battled to a heard-earned victory over Oakfield Breda ll.
The first half saw the home side go close on no fewer than ten occasions with the Oakfield keeper in outstanding form. He produced three “out of this world” saves, the best being from a point blank hammer shot from Stone which somehow he managed to push over the bar. The visitors’, against the run of play, then opened the scoring with a well worked goal.
The second half began as the first finished with ‘Bryansburn having attack after attack without scoring. Parkinson replaced Emberson and within five minutes the sub levelled from close range after some excellent approach play. With fifteen remaining it looked like it was not to be - chances were created, goal line clearances, saves were made. Finally, from a right wing cross from Dickinson, Stone back headed to grab the winner.
Evergreen Heasley added composure and experience in the closing stages and it will not be long before he reaches the milestone of 100 goals for Bryansburn albeit over a lengthy split period.

Training continues tonight (Thur) at Bangor Sportsplex, 7 – 8pm, and on Tuesday 8 – 9.30pm.

On Saturday the 1st XI entertain Bangor Swifts while the 2nd XI travel to Newington Rangers ll. In the Down Area League the 3rd XI are away to Stranmillis 37th OB and the 4th XI take on 82nd ll at Bloomfield in the 2nd round of the Mervyn Bassett cup.

Excellent Performance from Bryansburn

Bryansburn 1st XI’s up & down season hit a new high with a stunning 6-1 thrashing of Banbridge Rangers in the first round of the Intermediate Cup.
Not only had heavy rain threatened the fixture, (already re-scheduled after last weeks’ deluge) but their opponents were from Mid-Ulster Intermediate A making the performance all the more remarkable. Furthermore ‘Burn were not only missing a number of regulars but were coming into the match after a poor league run and manager-less. Things didn’t look good!
Caretaker manager Mellon shuffled the squad, dumped the unpopular 3-5-2 formation, re-instated Coard and Tyson, and the result was immediate. ‘Burn took to the field with energy and purpose missing from recent weeks and simply out-played their supposedly superior opposition.
Bryansburn were on top from the whistle: Coard and Cooling provided a steady supply of through balls to Morrison, Tolson and McGreevy who tortured the visiting defence while Tyson’s tackling and a solid back four snuffed out any occasional threat. Nonetheless less it took 23 minutes before a slick interchange between Coard and Cooling allowed Morrison tap in for 1-0 and the striker, fed by Tolson, was only denied his second when the keeper saved well moments later. One-way traffic, in swamp conditions, saw a McGreevy cross almost converted by Tolson but on 25 minutes, while everyone hesitated for a free–kick claim, Morrison out-stripped the Banbridge defence to chip in from close range for 2-0. A nervous fifteen minutes saw a predictable response from Banbridge but G&A McMullan, Hainon & Kehoe matched every counter and two finger-tip saves from Close denied longer-range efforts. In the dying minutes Tolson was denied at the other end but the half ended 2-0 to ‘Burn.
The second half saw a temporary suspension of the monsoon rain and Bryansburn played some of their best football of the season. Cooling, Tyson and Coard combined to release McGreevy to convert from twenty yards for 3-0 and Coard started and finished another slick passing move with Morrison and Tolson to make it 4-0 with only fifty minutes on the clock. Banbridge, clearly stunned by the developments, went on the offensive and won a penalty and when Close saved they were lucky to get a toe to the rebound and grab a consolation goal. ‘Burn’s keeper again proved his worth tipping over a vicious shot after 64 minutes and, after clearing the corner, Tyson knocked the ball to Coard who grabbed his second and a 5-1 lead. Bryansburn were home (if not dry) and when Tyson was felled in the box Morrison completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot. Subs Mallon, Higginson, and Cochrane replaced some tired legs and safely saw the game out to a well-deserved 6-1 victory.
This was a fantastic team performance even without considering the match, the conditions and the pre-match circumstances. Best for ‘Burn: Coard, Kehoe, Morrison & Tyson.
Bryansburn have received a bye in the 2nd round so are now through to the last 64 of the competition.

The 3rd XI made it three wins in a row with a last minute winner against Bangor Rangers lll.
The visitors made the more positive start with a couple of long range attempts on goal off target before deservedly taking the lead with a well worked goal and finish. However, ‘Burn hit back to equalise within minutes. McComb played the ball forward from the back, Dempster and the opposing Centre-half challenged for the ball which broke for Cardwell to home in on goal and score.
This settled ‘Burn and the home side began to look the more threatening. Some good attacking moves carved Bangor apart but too often the final ball was not of the same quality as the build-up. Cardwell then cut in from the left and rapped the crossbar with a curling left foot shot from 25 yards. Midway through the half Cardwell then linked with McMurray who was brought down in the box for a clear penalty. Cardwell stepped up to convert the spot kick and make it 2-1.
As expected Bangor Rangers rallied but the Bryansburn defence, superbly marshalled by Patterson and McComb, stood firm although stand-in keeper Gilmer made one superb save from a header.
In the second half the visitors’ enjoyed their best spell of the match and they fired a golden chance wide before the outstretched boot of Gilmer deflected another effort just wide. ‘Burn also had to defend a number of corners which they did successfully until a soft header went through a crowded goalmouth and nestled in the back of the net to make it 2-2.
Both sides then went in search of a winner and Cardwell missed a couple of good chances before McMurray screwed his shot just wide. The introduction of Ballantine gave the home side added impetus and he made one mazy run before firing just wide of the post. In the closing stages Bangor Rangers enjoyed more of the ball without looking like scoring and ‘Burn were always threatening on the break.
With both sides looking to settle for the draw, which would have been a fair result, Bryansburn then struck with a dramatic last minute winner. Ballantine was the architect making a run into the box before squaring for Cole who took one touch and rifled into the bottom corner. There was no chance for a reply as the final whistle blew seconds after the restart.

Training continues tonight (Thur) at Bangor Sportsplex, 7 – 8pm, and on Tuesday 8 – 9.30pm.

On Saturday the 1st XI entertain Lisburn Rangers in the 3rd round of the Irish Cup with a 1.30pm kick-off while the 2nd XI travel to Kilroot Rec ll. In the Down Area League the 3rd XI are away to 43rd OB and the 4th XI take on Oakfield Breda ll at Bloomfield.

Three out of Three for Bryansburn

Bryansburn 1st XI’s Intermediate Cup game against Banbridge Rangers fell victim to the weather but the other three teams played as scheduled with all recording impressive away victories.

The 2nd XI travelled to unbeaten Saintfield United ll and inflicted their first league defeat with an emphatic 5-1 score-line. The success was built upon commanding performances at the heart of the defence by J.McMullan and Jones while Scott and Mallon controlled the centre of the park. ‘Burn were on top from the start and the surprise was that it took until the 19th minute for them to make the breakthrough. The best of the early chances fell to McGreevy who was through one on one with the keeper but although he sent the keeper the wrong way, his shot went the wrong side of the post. Then Mallon tried his luck from the edge of the area and his shot missed everyone in the box to go in off the far post. Unfortunately ‘Burn failed to build on their good start and the home side equalised on the half hour mark. A throw in from the left bounced in the Bryansburn box and the loose ball was converted. However, Bryansburn remained on top and regained their lead seven minutes before the break with a good strike from Ballantine.
Four minutes into the second half Bryansburn went 3-1 in front. McGreevy made a powerful run down the left and he crossed for Ballantine to tap home his second of the game at the far post. Cochrane replaced Stanex on the hour mark and he was immediately involved in the action. His speed got him in behind the Saintfield defence only for the keeper to save with his legs.
However the fourth goal was not denied for long arriving in the 71st minute. Cochrane blasted a 25-yard free-kick on target and the ball took a slight deflection before going in off the post. The scoring was completed tem minutes from time when the keeper let a speculative long range shot from McGreevy slip through his legs to make it 5-1.
Great team performance and result.

The 3rd XI completed the double over Queens Grads lll with a hard fought 3-1 win at the Dub.
‘Burn made a bright start, forcing several early corners but it was the home side who took the lead. Cole failed to cut out a long ball from the defence and the finish from the left-winger was clinical. He fired into the top corner from twenty-five yards giving stand-in keeper Gilmer no chance. Bryansburn plugged away and deservedly equalised when Cardwell surged into the box and pulled the ball back for Murphy to blast into the net. Bryansburn should have taken the lead, playing some great football but too often the final ball did not match the quality of the approach play. Neither side carved out any real chances of note in the final twenty minutes of the half and the score remained 1-1 at the interval.
Queens had their best spell of the match in the early part of the second half but the back four of Cole, McComb, Patterson and Dickson held firm. ‘Burn battled their way back into the game and the turning point came when the official referee awarded Bryansburn a penalty when the Queens defender looked to have played the ball first. Cardwell stepped up and converted the spot kick into the bottom corner.
This unsettled the home side and Bryansburn threatened a few times before they made it 3-1 in the 73rd minute. Cole surged forward from the back and his hard, low, twenty-five yard shot squirmed under the keeper. After this Bryansburn had the experience to close the game out and were able to give sixteen year-old Reece Dempster his first taste of senior football and he settled in well showing some nice touches.

The 4th XI had an impressive 5-3 win at league champions Brentwood ll. Playing with the wind in the first half the visitors struggled to play neat football with passes being blown astray by the mere gale-force winds.  Both sides were creating chances and Black prevented the home side from taking the lead, with his customary excellent goal-keeping.  The visitors created a couple of chances, the closest being a scrambled clearance off the line, following a corner. With the wind dropping ten minutes before the interval, Burn managed to retain possession and play some good football.  This was rewarded four minutes before the break, when a five man move, culminated in Emberson taking a reverse pass from Dickinson, before firing in a tremendous shot from 25 yards out.
The second period against the wind was actually an advantage for the visitors as the ball was no longer running away from them. On the hour mark Lowry doubled the scoring, having beaten two defenders before firing in at the near post.  Soon after an Emberson corner to the front post was majestically back-heeled by Lowry for the visitors' 3rd strike. Brentwood pushed hard and pulled one back.  Within minutes Stevenson picked up the ball at the halfway line and despite the presence of the two midfielders in pursuit, continued his strong run towards the goals where he rounded the centre half before firing home a strong shot from outside the box to make it 4-1.  Brentwood pulled another goal back in the closing stages, but Attipoe fired home number five for the visitors, to take all three points.

Training continues tonight (Thur) at Bangor Sportsplex, 7 – 8pm, and on Tuesday 8 – 9.30pm.

On Saturday the 1st XI entertain Banbridge Rangers in the 1st round of the Intermediate Cup with a 1.30pm kick-off while the 2nd XI travel to Groomsport ll. In the Down Area League the 3rd XI play Bangor Rangers lll at Bloomfield while the 4th XI hope to arrange a friendly.

Players are reminded that annual subs are now overdue and must be paid or they will not be available for team selection.

There are still places available on the annual Club trip. The price has now gone up to £120 for return flights to Newcastle and three nights in a Travelodge Hotel and will continue to rise as more people book on. ‘Burn Second Half Collapse

Bryansburn 1st slumped to a disastrous 5-2 defeat away to Iveagh United despite having looked the better side for the first thirty-five minutes. The loss of MacLeod to a bad injury early in the second half did little to help their cause but poor passing in the middle of the park and suicidal defending at the back made it all too easy for the home side to run riot in the final hour.
Returning to league action after recent cup distractions, ‘Burn were looking to build on their shaky start to the season but it took an early miss-kick by Moore and face-saving save to shock them into action. Bryansburn’s wide men were soon making good progress down the flanks while their strikers were more than a match for the Iveagh defence. A Tolson cross saw a Cochrane shot well saved, Morrison’s near-post flick was clearly palmed away  by the home defender, McGreevy was tripped in the box when through on goal but at the other end Moore pulled off a great blocking save to keep scores level in for the first fifteen minutes.
Moore again came to the rescue with a great stop after twenty minutes but careless passing and hesitant defending allowed Iveagh to slip through the gaps and draw first blood with a clinical finish wide of the keeper. At 1-0 down ‘Burn rallied and after Morrison’s shot from McMullan’s through-ball was well-saved, a second try moments later saw Tolson hold off the centre half to coolly slide the ball under the keeper to level midway through the half. Suddenly it was one-way traffic with Iveagh struggling to contain a rampant Bryansburn. McGreevy took it to 2-1 with blistering run and twenty yard effort and Cochrane went close with a chip just over the bar. Unfortunately all the hard work was undone seconds before halftime when Iveagh again found it all too simple to make progress down the ‘Burn left, pull Kehoe, Mellon and MacLeod across the pitch, fire in a low cross behind the back three and find an unmarked striker to level at 2-2.
The restart saw Morrison shoot wide of the post and Cooling loft an effort over the bar but it was déjà-vu when Iveagh broke and ‘Burns failure to deal with a simple ball over the top allowed them to fire home for a 3-2 lead after 51 minutes. Coard and Stanex came on for Cochrane and McGreevy but a fluke, accidental, fall saw MacLeod seriously damage his ankle and leave the field by ambulance to be replaced by Tyson.
Bryansburn rallied briefly after the twenty minute injury delay and Morrison saw a powerful header stifled on the Iveagh goal-line, Stanex drew a good save and a Cooling free-kick went into the keeper’s arms but it was clear that their opponents were just waiting for another opportunity to exploit ‘Burns midfield confusion and defensive frailties. Thompson and Cooling joined the three man attack in an effort to salvage something from the match but two further Iveagh goals came in the final ten minutes, each witnessed by five Bryansburn players from the halfway line as a bad day descended into chaos and a 5-2 thrashing.
Verdict: must do better/cannot do worse. Best wishes from everyone at the club to Andy MacLeod for a speedy recovery.

The 2nd XI recorded a comfortable 3-0 home win over Portaferry Rovers ll with all the goals coming in the first half.
Higginson was the chief tormentor of Portaferry as he exploited a poor Left-back time and time again. A series of crosses from him caused havoc in the visitors’ rearguard, while the home side forced a number of corners and set pieces. Then pressure was relentless and the only surprise was that it took until the 14th minute until the deadlock was broken. Higginson was found in space out on the right with his marker caught up the pitch and he cut in to beat the keeper at his near post. ‘Burn continued to see plenty of the ball and created a couple of half chances before doubling their lead ten minutes later. Higginson was fouled on the right and Parkes fired the free-kick into the box where a slight deflection took the ball into the net.
Portaferry forced a couple of corners but it was Bryansburn who remained on top and they increased their lead to 3-0 in the 36th minute. Higginson forced a corner on the right and when the ball came into the box it landed at the feet of Higginson and he stabbed the ball home.
The second half saw the visitors’ come into the game more but the Bryansburn defence was superbly marshalled by J.McMullan and Jones who dealt with anything Portaferry had to offer. Keeper Close made one superb point blank save to keep his clean sheet intact as ‘Burn coasted through the half content to sit on their three goal lead and could afford the luxury of giving all three subs a lengthy run-out. They should, however, have made it four ten minutes from time but substitute Cole missed a sitter from four yards out.

The 3rd XI’s trip to Ards Rangers lll was called off on Saturday morning when Drome Park was declared unplayable.

In perfect conditions at Bloomfield Playing Fields the 4th XI entertained Bangor Rangers IV in round 1 of the Mervyn Bassett Cup and romped to a convincing 7-2 victory.
‘Burn started brightly and should have opened the scoring in only the 2nd minute only for Dickinson to shoot wide.  Kennedy, who was playing in a right wing position, was creating a number of chances down the flank, but his approach play yielded no success. Bryansburn opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Dickinson made amends and calmly slotted home the opening goal.  Within five minutes the score was level.  The game was very even, however ‘Burn restored the lead with Kennedy bearing down the right wing and after bravely challenging for the ball knocked it in for his first goal of the season.
The second period saw the home side dominate and a quick fire double by Lowry in the opening twenty minutes of the half saw the game end as a contest.  Dickinson added his second, although Bangor Rangers again responded by scoring their second to make it 5-2.  Lowry completed his second half hat trick when coolly rounding the defenders and accurately shooting home.  With five minutes remaining Emberson slotted home number seven.
This was a solid display for the second week running from Bryansburn leaving a final score of 7-2.

Training continues tonight (Thur) at Bangor Sportsplex, 7 – 8pm, and on Tuesday 8 – 9.30pm.

On Saturday the 1st XI entertain Banbridge Rangers in the 1st round of the Intermediate Cup while the 2nd XI travel to Saintfield United Rovers ll. In the Down Area League the 3rd XI visit Queens Grads lll and the 4th XI are at home to Brentwood ll.

Great Day for ‘Burn

Bryansburn had a successful day on Saturday recording three wins and a draw from the four games played with the highlight being the 1st XI booking their place in the 3rd round of the Irish Cup.

The 1st XI beat Seagoe in their 2nd round Irish Cup tie but the 2-0 score-line did little justice to an impressive and dominant display in the depths of County Armagh.
Bryansburn were on the front foot from the whistle with Mellon, MacLeod and Kehoe assured in the centre of defence and Tyson & McGreevy causing the home side real problems down the flanks. Half chances fell to Morrison, Cochrane & Thompson with almost no reply from Seagoe but it took a bizarre own-goal after twenty minutes to give ‘Burn the lead. Good work on the right saw Morrison fire in a low shot but as the ‘keeper parried to “safety” their hapless centre-half blasted his clearance against the goalie’s head and the ball rebounded into the back of the net for 1-0. Luck, however, went full circle as the next twenty-five minutes saw ‘Burn totally in control but unable to add to their slim lead. Morrison shot narrowly wide of the post and had a diving header scrambled off the line; a great passing move saw a couple of Thompson shots well saved; Cooling stubbed a twenty yard effort while a string of corners and free-kicks went unrewarded. Half-time 1-0.
Jones replaced Mellon at the re-start and Cooling went close with a free-kick but Bryansburn had ‘keeper Close to thank for a good save to deny Seagoe an unlikely equaliser. ‘Burn resumed the offensive and laid siege to the home goal: Morrison had one shot smothered and another saved; McGreevy’s cross/shot flew inches wide of Tyson’s head and the post and both McGreevy and McMullan shots were foiled by increasingly desperate blocks in the penalty area. Hanna replaced Cochrane and, as ‘Burn pressed with increasing frustration for their second, Close again had to save their blushes by stifling a dangerous free-kick at his near-post. Seagoe sensed that they might get back into the game and threw everything they had at Bryansburn winning a number of free headers from free-kicks and corners but failing to find the net.
As the game went well past the ninety minutes a long clearance found substitute Stannex who calmly rounded two defenders before slotting home for a decisive 2-0 lead and another well-deserved cup victory.
A strange match, with the hardest part of the day negotiating the Belfast traffic chaos on the way to the match. On another day this could have been six or seven nil but as chances came and went without reward there was always the threat of Seagoe snatching a goal and pushing the game into extra time or penalties.
Best for Bryansburn: Macleod, Kehoe and Mellon’s calm and disciplined defending limited Seagoe to a single shot on target in the first forty-five minutes.

The 2nd XI dropped two points when they drew 3-3 at home to Saintfield ll in an entertaining game at Ballywooley that they should have won.
There was no sign of the goals that were to come in opening twenty minutes as neither side had any chances of note albeit Bryansburn had the balance of play. Then Bryansburn cleared a corner and with a couple of players slow to push out the ball was played back in, headed across goal and tapped in as the visitors’ took the lead.  ‘Burn remained on top but created no more than a few half chances and still trailed 1-0 at the break.
Early in the second half the home side deservedly equalised when Patterson fired in an inviting cross from the left and Mallon headed the ball down and over the keeper to make it 1-1. Tyson then missed a couple of good chances for ‘Burn to take the lead while they survived one scramble in the box at the other end. Hainon replaced Mallon in the centre of the park on the hour mark and within a couple of minutes Bryansburn took the lead. Coard flicked the ball on for Tyson and his shot deflected in off a defender. However, the lead was short-lived as Saintfield hit back. A long throw into the box was flicked on and the ball looped over keeper Moore, hit the bar and was scrambled in.
With fifteen minutes remaining Bryansburn then took the lead for a second time. Coard delivered a pinpoint delivery from a corner to the back post where Parkes timed his run to perfection before volleying in off the underside of the bar. Yet again, ‘Burn failed to hold on to the lead and the damage was caused by another long throw. Patterson failed to clear and the ball fell for a striker to make it 3-3.
In an exciting finale both sides had chances to snatch a winner. Tyson fired the ball across goal and Ballantine hit the inside of the post with the ball rolling across the line before being cleared. At the other end Parkes was caught in possession, Gray brought a player down just outside the box and from the indirect free-kick Saintfield too hit the woodwork. Bryansburn pushed to the end but failed to find the winner their overall play deserved.

On the other pitch the 3rd XI were also involved in an entertaining match only they came out on top in a seven goal thriller against Stranmillis 37th OB.
The opening stages were dominated by Bryansburn and Cardwell was foiled twice by the visiting keeper before the best chance of the match so far. Dempster chipped the ball over the Stranmillis back-line and Cardwell lifted the ball over the advancing keeper. However, the keeper got a hand to the ball taking the pace off it and a defender made it back to clear off the line.
Despite not having been in the game, Stranmillis served a warning as they carved open the ‘Burn rearguard to leave a player in on goal only for Steventon to make a great save. The warning was not heeded as shortly after they were gifted another chance and this time Steventon was beaten at the second attempt as the visitors took the lead.
It did not take long for the home side to equalise when McMurray curled the ball over the keeper, who was off his line, from wide on the left. ‘Burn remained on top and soon took the lead. A free-kick from wide right was swung in by McMurray, Cardwell challenged the keeper, they both missed the ball and it ended up in the net. The game became too open for the rest of the half and Steventon pulled off two saves and Patterson made a great goal-line clearance before 37th made it 2-2. Even then ‘Burn should have regained the lead before the break. Dempster threaded in Cole and the keeper somehow managed to tip his blistering drive against the bar and over.
Having dominated most of the first half, ‘Burn lost their way somewhat in the early stages of the second half. The visitors had a number of chances to take the lead and would have done so had it not been for Steventon in nets. Finally they did go 3-2 in front, breaking down the right and squaring for the ball to be hammered home.
Bryansburn battled hard and finally played their way back into the game before scoring a brilliant equaliser. Cardwell won the ball in the middle of the park and played it wide right to Cole. He picked out Dempster at the back post and his cushioned header found substitute Gilmer and he blasted the ball home.
The game was now in the balance but Bryansburn always looked the most likely to get the winner and Gilmer was the hero as he chased a ball into the box and stabbed the ball past the keeper. Cole fired in a couple of dangerous crosses, Cardwell was foiled twice and Dempster missed a sitter as ‘Burn tried in vain to kill the game off. In the end it did not matter as Stranmillis never really troubled the ‘Burn defence in the closing ten minutes,
Best for Bryansburn were Cole and Steventon.

The 4th XI travelled to Greenwell Star ll and returned with all three points after a tremendous 2-1 win.
In perfect conditions a fiercely competitive and entertaining game was played and well refereed by the Match Official.  Greenwell were in the ascendency for the opening twenty minutes, however the visitors defence and keeper Black ensured no break-through was made.  ‘Burn settled for the remainder of the first period and came close on three occasions through Lowry, Dickinson and Stone.  With half time looming a free kick in injury time was met by Lowry whose header back across the six yard box and headed home by Bogle for his second goal in successive games.
The home side were playing some great football and had a number of chances, however with Black in splendid form the visitors remained in front.
Halfway through the second period Stone's pace took him past firstly the midfielder and then the right-back before crossing low towards the back post where Lowry was at hand to double the score.
‘Burn were reduced to 10 men for a second bookable offence and almost immediately the home side scrambled home a deserved goal.  With ten minutes remaining an injury to Lowry forced a reshuffle.  Canning made his eagerly awaited return to the heart of the defence and maintained stability.  Dickinson broke clear in the dying moments but his shot went past the post.  The visitors defended resolutely until the final whistle to earn all three points.
This was by far the best performance from the squad this season.  “Man of the Match” was Kennedy.

Training continues tonight (Thur) at Bangor Sportsplex, 7 – 8pm, and on Tuesday 8 – 9.30pm.

On Saturday the 1st XI travel to Iveagh United while the 2nd XI entertain Portaferry Rovers ll. In the Down Area League the 3rd XI visit Ards Rangers lll and the 4th XI are at home to Bangor Rangers IV in the 1st round of the Reserve Team Cup. .
